Around the globe, Christmas marks the high point of Christian life with festivities that extend over several days. Christmas customs are as diverse as the living conditions and weather patterns of the celebrating Christians. This cultural diversity gives rise to a wide variety of Christmas carols. Christmas carols in Europe have a festive and dignified character. African Christmas carols often sound like an invitation to dance; North American Christmas carols, which, due to cultural differences, originated much later than most European ones, often have a hit-like quality. In many Latin American Christmas carols, the focus is on festive togetherness; in the gospel songs of African American cultures, the joy of singing and dancing is often more apparent than the Christmas message.
