Kalimbas are reed instruments originating in southern Africa, where they come in countless shapes and styles. Our Kalimba B11 'Melody' is meticulously handcrafted from solid American cherry (black cherry) wood. The surfaces are treated and polished with plant-based oils and waxes. The 11 reeds are precisely tuned to the G major scale, allowing you to play a wide variety of well-known songs. The 'Melody' is also well-suited for improvisation and intuitive playing.
For reasons of playing technique and sound, we arranged the reeds in alternating long and shorter lengths. The six shorter reeds were bent so that their ends are at a higher level than those of the long reeds, making them easily accessible to the thumbs. When playing notes from low to high, the five long reeds are plucked first, alternating between the two thumbs, from the center outwards – the right thumb starting on reed number 6 – followed by the six short reeds, also from the center outwards. The left thumb starts on reed number 5.
The Kalimba B11 electric model is equipped with a piezo pickup and a 6.35 mm jack socket. This allows for direct sound recording at the instrument without an additional microphone.
