The Sansula – a patented invention from HOKEMA – is an innovative development of the Kalimba (also called Sansa or Mbira), which originated in Southern Africa. Kalimbas are lamellophones that are plucked with the thumbs or fingers. In Africa, they can be found in countless forms and designs, where the vibration of the tines is amplified in various ways (e.g., on a resonance box, a hollow body such as a calabash gourd, or simply a solid piece of wood). In the Sansula, the vibration of the tines is first 'stored' in a wooden block, which then transmits it to a sound membrane. This way, the sound is audible for much longer than with other methods of sound amplification. Supported by the tuning – octaves are close together – a wonderful, soft, overtone-rich sound is produced, which is easily coaxed from the instrument.
Special tuning possible.
